the hawaii superferry

The Hawaii Superferry was a privately financed inter-island transport ship that ferried passengers and vehicles between the islands. The service was started in 2007 and commenced with daily round-trips between Honolulu and Kahului, Maui. The ferry service was supposed to also serve Lihue, Kauai and Kawaihae Harbor on the Island of Hawaii. Travel to those destinations were never fulfilled as the ferry operation got bogged down in government red tape, opposition from competitors and environmentalists, despite the public and business communities who benefitted from the service.

This picture was shot on the first day of commercial operation in August, 2007. The photograph has been published with authorization and illegally on many websites and publications. The picture was shot at 2:00 in the afternoon from the 10th floor observation deck of Aloha Tower in Honolulu.
 
The Superferry service was halted by a ruling from the Hawaii State Supreme Court after finding that special legislation enabling the ferry to operate prior to the completion of an environmental impact statement was unconstitutional. The ruling forced them into bankruptcy and closure.

This photo was shot in August 2005 during a march by the Hawaiian Community, Kamehameha School students and alumni against a ruling filed by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in California on the institution's admissions policy. This photo was published in Broken Trust: Greed, Mismanagement & Political Manipulation at America's Largest Charitable Trust by Samuel P. King and Randall W. Roth in 2006. The book was published by University of Hawaii Press in Honolulu.

This was shot at the First Hawaiian Auto Show on March 24. It's the latest model of the legendary Ford Mustang. The car has been in continuous production since 1964. It is the original pony and muscle car having survived now for more than five decades. Very cool. Category: Automotive, Car Show

QUEEN ELIZABETH II

She was the Grand Dame of Cunard's passenger service line from 1969 to 2008. This is the Queen Elizabeth II docked at Honolulu Harbor on her last around the world voyage in March 2008. The majestic ocean liner was retired that year. She used to be a regular, annual visitor to Honolulu and always a great photo op for anyone who encountered her.
